Please note: Students entering the Ayurvedic Medicine and Yoga Therapy program in this semester should plan to register for YTT 200 (if not completed at another institution), Ayurvedic Medicine II, and The Pancha Karma and Shat Karma Therapist’s Training Program. If the student already has a YTT certificate, he/she may elect to take the Preparation of Ayurvedic Herbs and History of Ayurveda course as well as the Ayurvedic Medicine I and Pancha Karma/Shat Karma Therapists training program during the first semester.

This certification training program is designed to 1) deepen the student’s experience, understanding, and skill in Yoga practice, 2) enable the graduates of the program to authentically, competently, and confidently teach beginning Yoga, and 3) meet the 200-hr training requirements for Yoga Alliance registry. Course content includes instruction in asanas, pranayama, meditation, cleansing practices, Sanskrit pronunciation and chanting, Yoga philosophy, the Ayurvedic basis of Hatha Yoga practices, anatomy/physiology, subtle body theory, teaching methodology, and practicum (student teaching). For all students who are not already 200-hr certified, it is a required pre-requisite for entry into RMIYA’s Yoga Therapy Professional Certification Program, and for RMIYA’s Ayurvedic Medicine and Yoga Therapy Practitioner’s Certification Program.

Ayurvedic Medicine I: Overview of Ayurveda (45 hrs/3 cr)

An introduction to the basic concepts of Ayurvedic Medicine, including Samkhya philosophy, which explain the world view and the workings of Ayurveda. A beginning overview of the field including definitions of health, Ayurvedic anatomy and physiology; causes and symptoms of imbalances, and the process of development of disease. Instruction in practical skills of assessment of prakriti and vikrti, including pulse and tongue diagnosis. A beginning understanding of the basic healing modalities of the Ayurvedic medicine toolkit: lifestyle, diet, therapeutic Yoga, panchakarma, and properties and uses of approximately 60 herbs. Course available by recording. This course is a pre-requisite for all other Ayurveda courses offered at RMIYA.

A Journey of Significance: The History of Ayurveda (45 hrs/3cr) Jan 25-28

Ayurveda is the world’s oldest still-in-practice health care system, and this course is designed to enable students to place in proper context the discoveries and developments which span approximately four thousand years of history. Course includes ethnobotany of pre-Vedic India; Vedic culture and the development of early Ayurvedic principles; first medical texts: contributions, additions, and disparities in thinking between the three main founders and their students; early CE to Madhava Nidana; Medieval Period; Ayurveda under the Moghul Empire and the British Raj; Ayurveda in Modern Times. 225-hour Ayurvedic Pancha Karma and Yogic Shat Karma
Therapist Certification Training Program March 22-June 9 (60 hrs/4cr)
Faculty: Sarasvati Buhrman, Ph.D., Bharat Vaidya, B.A.M.S., M.D., Kate Fotopolous, and Anupama Vaidya.
The purpose of this training program is two-fold: 1) to provide students in the 1600-hour Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy Practitioner’s Training Program, as well as graduates of the Level II 950-hr Yoga Therapy Professional Certification Program with the training they will need to carry out the therapies of Ayurvedic Pancha Karma and/or Yogic Shat Kriya as part of their professional practice of Ayuvedic Medicine and/or Yoga Therapy, and 2) to provide students who are primarily interested in Ayurvedic body therapies and do not wish to become Ayurvedic practitioners or Yoga Therapists with the understanding and skills they will need to carry out bodywork therapies under the supervision or referral of an Ayurvedic practitioner or Yoga Therapist. Pre-requisite: Ayurvedic Medicine I. This training should be completed by 1600-hr program students as soon as possible during their first year; by 950-hr YTT program students at the end of their first year.
Please note: Level II Yoga Therapy students who are not enrolled in the Ayurvedic Medicine and Yoga Therapy Program are not required to take the Body Therapies internship section of the course, the Special Foods for Seasonal Therapies and Pancha Karma, or the Rasayana section of the training. Preparation of Ayurvedic Herbs and Medicines (Aushadkriya)
Mar 2-3, 9-10. (30 hrs/2cr)
Bharat Vaidya, B.A.M.S., M.D
The traditional methods of collecting, preparing, and purifying common plant and mineral substances according to Ayurvedic methods, as well as the rationale for doing so, and an understanding of the historical development of Aushadh Kriya through the Samhitas. The course includes assessing quality of herbs and minerals and determining correct dosage, ancient measures and their modern equivalents, and comparisons with modern pharmaco-dynamics. This hands-on class will cover ways in which preparation methods can be used to increase the effectiveness of herbs and to render selected minerals safe, and which types of preparations are most effective in which types of situations. Chyvan prash, purification of common minerals, including sulfer and borax, and alcohols, cough syrups, and other medicines will be prepared by class participants.
Prerequisite: Ayurvedic Medicine I. May be taken either in the first or second year of training (see note above).

Ayurvedic Nutrition II: Foods for Healing Disease (15 hrs/1cr)

Classical Principles of Ayurvedic Nutrition as relate to the management of specific diseases. Hands on preparation of specific dishes and decoctions which are famous in traditional Ayurveda as treatments for specific diseases. Prerequisite: Ayurvedic Medicine I, Ayurvedic Pathology I, Ayurvedic Nutrition I.

Ayurvedic Pharmacology: Nighantu (90 hrs/ 6 cr.)
Bharat Vaidya, B.A.M.S., M.D.
Continuing class, qualified new registrants must take the first sessions via recording. Using herbs covered in classical Nighantu texts as a background, this course additionally introduces basic concepts from western pharmacology such as therapeutic index, measures of toxicity, and measures of safety and efficacy. The student is also introduced to the biochemistry of important active ingredients in medicinal plants, as well their absorption, transport, metabolism, and excretion. Principles of administration and drug-herb interactions will be covered in depth. Prerequisites: Ayurvedic Medicine I and Preparation of Ayurvedic Herbs.

An in-depth approach to a major text of Ayurvedic disease diagnosis, correspondences between Ayurvedic and modern descriptions of diseases, and their treatments. Prerequisite: Ayurvedic medicine I, Ayurvedic medicine II, Ayurvedic Pathology I, Preparation of Ayurvedic Herbs and Medicines, and Ayurvedic Pharmacology. Strongly recommended: Introduction to Sanskrit.

Faculty Bios
Dr. Sarasvati Buhrman Ph.D.
Dr Buhrman is a Senior Faculty Member at the Rocky Mountain
Institute of Yoga and Ayurveda in Boulder, Co (rmiya.org) and
adjunct professor at Metropolitan State College in Denver, Co. She is also
a former faculty member of the International Yoga College and
the Naropa Institute. She received her BS in Biology
at the College of William and Mary and studied genetics at the
graduate level at the University of California at Davis. She received
her Ph.D. in psychological Anthropology at the University of
Colorado, Boulder. A Yogic monastic in the Vairagi order and a
student of Yoga master Baba Hari Dass since 1976, she studied
Ayurvedic medicine and was qualified to practice by Professor R.P.
Trivedi of Benares Hindu University. She served for five years on the
board of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association and maintains a
private practice of Ayurvedic medicine and classical Yoga Therapy in
Boulder, Co. She is a member of the World Council of Yoga of the
International Yoga Federation. Her publications are available on her

Dr. Gary Brown, D.O.
Dr. Brown graduated from the University Of Health Sciences College Of
Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. He has completed his
Internship at Tri-City hospital in Dallas, Texas and his residency in
Preventive/Occupational medicine at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in
Pontiac, Michigan. He is board certified. He studied Yoga with Baba
Hari Dass, and practices medicine at Sunflower Family Medicine Clinic

Dr. Bharat Vaidya, B.A.M.S., M.D.
Dr. Vaidya received his Ayurvedic medical training in Mumbai and earned his medical degree
in Belgium. Dr. Vaidya hails from an Ayurvedic lineage instrumental in
the establishment of modern Ayurvedic universities in India. He has
practiced medicine in India, Europe, and the U.S., including
obstetrics and gynecology. He specializes in the history of Ayurveda,
pharmacology, gerontology, rejuvenation, somatic psychology and other
branches of Ayurveda.

*Rasayana: The Art of Rejuvenation (30 hrs/2 cr) Bharat Vaidya, B.A.M.S., M.D. Rasayana, or Ayurvedic rejuvenation practices, are done after panchakarma seasonal cleansings, after treatment of disease, after injury, in cases of debility, and to combat aging and foster a long, healthy, productive life. Rejuvenation can be as simple as taking certain life-extending plants or minerals; or it can include regimens of special diets, seclusion, and mantra, meditation, and other yoga practices.
